Fall Foliage Fun near Jackson, NH
It’s still summer here in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, but before you know it the hardwood canopies around here will be unveiling their most dazzling show of the year—and you don’t want to miss it!
New Hampshire’s World-Famous Fall Colors
As we’ve written about before here at the Wentworth Inn blog, New England is justifiably world-famous for its autumn foliage, which through a combination of climatic, geographic, and ecological factors reaches an unrivaled intensity here. What with the blazing maples, birches, and other showstoppers our diverse forests harbor, it’s no surprise that “leaf-peeping” is such a popular form of seasonal tourism, drawing sightseers and shutterbugs from all over the globe.
With a room at the Wentworth, you’ve got especially prime leaf-peeping headquarters: Not only are the White Mountains that envelop us richly endowed with colorful fall foliage, but their elevational range can set the stage for an extended season as the colors shift across the mountainsides and lowlands.
We typically see peak color here in the Whites in early October, but the timing varies from year to year of course. New Hampshire’s Division of Travel & Tourism Development provides foliage updates once the season sets in.
Return of the Pumpkin People, 2017 Edition
The leaf-peeping pleasures overlap with some of our area’s well-known autumn celebrations. Here in Jackson we’ve got the Return of the Pumpkin People, for instance. Now in its 33rd year, this much-loved tradition sees yards in town populated by pumpkin scarecrows of all kind—with some mighty elaborate dioramas among the showcase. Pick up a ballot, tour the Pumpkin People where they live, and vote on your favorite displays!
The Fryeburg Fair
Just a hop, skip, and a jump from our White Mountains nook across the border in Maine, the town of Fryeburg will be throwing the 167th run-through (yes, you read that right) of its famous fair from October 1 through the 8th. From oxen and draft-horse showcases to sheepdog trials, from the log-rolling and axe-throwing drama of the Woodsmen’s Field Day to the high-profile Skillet Throw (both on October 2), there’s a whole lot of action going down at the Fryeburg County Fair—not to mention all manner of rides, games, and food on hand as well.
The Sandwich Fair
On Columbus Day Weekend, meanwhile, you can enjoy more old-fashioned autumn fun at the Sandwich Fair in Sandwich, New Hampshire. Only about an hour’s drive from the Wentworth Inn, Sandwich’s fairground fun is not to be missed either, what with all the livestock demos, live entertainment, antique tractor pulls, and other attractions filling the schedule to the brim.
