Outdoor Activities at The Wentworth

Our corner of New England here at The Wentworth Inn, the mighty White Mountains of New Hampshire, offer outstanding year-round outdoor recreation. Summertime sees the landscape at its most all-around accessible, from runnable rivers to “baggable” peaks.

Here’s a quick survey of just some of the outdoor fun and adventure you can pursue as a guest of ours at our historic country inn!

Hiking

From short, level nature strolls to intense backcountry routes, the White Mountains serve up some of the best hiking anywhere. While you can drive or take a cog railroad to the summit of Mount Washington—the 6,288-foot high point not only of the White Mountains but also of the Northern Appalachians as a whole—you can also crank up the adventure by hoofing it up to the top via, for example, the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. Mount Adams (5,793 feet) and other grand peaks of the Presidential Range—the highest crest of the Whites—offer other gob-smackingly beautiful climbs, even if you may not be ready to tackle the strenuous Presidential Traverse, one of the East’s premier trekking challenges.

Another White Mountain jewel close to The Wentworth is Crawford Notch State Park, which includes such awesome hiking destinations as Arethusa and Ripley falls and the 2,804-foot crown of Mount Willard, with its sublime view of the park’s namesake pass and surrounding high peaks.

Other great local hikes include Black Cap Mountain (a short trek serving up more fabulous White Mountain views) and the wonderful cascading whitewater of Diana’s Baths along Lucy Brook.

Rock Climbing

Besides mountaineering in the White Mountains, you’ve also got some genuine rock-climbing opportunities while luxuriating at The Wentworth Inn. Within view of the town of North Conway are two fabulous climbing spots: Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge (which fall within Cathedral Ledge State Park).

River Running on the Saco

The Saco River running off Crawford Notch offers a fine flow for kayakers, canoeists, rafters, and tubers. You’ve got quite a few choices when it comes to local outfitters offering guided river trips and boat rentals.

Biking

From the long-distance Presidential Rail Trail to mountain biking at first-rate local ski resorts such as Bretton Woods and Attitash Mountain, cyclists have plenty to sink their teeth into as well.

Golfing

The Wentworth also happens to be an amazing place for folks of the golfing persuasion, thanks to our very own 18-hole course framed by a Presidential Range skyline at the Wentworth Golf Club. Whether you’re a casual beginner or an intensely competitive veteran player, you’ll have a blast here!
